The Crazy Eyed Father

The Legend of the Crazy Eyes

The domestic dynamic is shaped by a local folk tale regarding Father’s "crazy eyes." The children insist his gaze can turn people to stone, a claim Father adamantly rejects by stating he isn't Medusa and has no interest in petrifying the youth. This protective stance on his own features is contrasted when his brother, Uncle Scott, arrives. While Father is accused of being a stone-turner, the kids praise Uncle Scott for having eyes so kind they supposedly turn people into angels.

Academic and Culinary Struggles

Despite being "so good with counting money" as a vendor, Father finds himself outmatched by his children's middle school entrance exams. His math tutoring is as fragmented as his snack descriptions; when he attempts to guide them through an equation of three plus five minus one, he loses his train of thought. This leads the children to realize they might be better off taking over the family business, the details of which remain a mystery even to them.

Father remains the primary provider of the household, hauling back the spoils of a "tough day" at the Night Market. He delivers highly anticipated quackers and mysterious snap whappers, often leaving his children to fill in the blanks when he trails off mid-sentence. Whether he is navigating his children's academic frustrations or their fears of being turned to stone, Father remains the steady, if slightly bewildered, center of the home.
